10 Things Every Homeowner Should Do Before Fall Arrives

Date

Get your home ready for fall with 10 simple maintenance tips, from checking gutters and HVAC filters to refreshing indoor and outdoor spaces.

10 Things Every Homeowner Should Do Before Fall Arrives

There’s something about those first hints of cooler weather that makes home feel a little different. Maybe it’s a window open for a little while in the morning, an evening spent outside, football on TV, or more time gathered around the kitchen table. Fall isn’t quite here yet, but before it fully settles in, it’s worth giving your home a little attention, too.

The good news? You don’t need an entire weekend or a garage full of tools. A few simple checks and small projects now can help your home feel more comfortable and ready for the months ahead.

1. Clean Out the Gutters

Summer storms can leave behind leaves, twigs, and other debris. Give your gutters and downspouts a quick cleaning so rainwater can flow where it’s supposed to. While you’re up there, look for anything that appears loose or damaged.

2. Check Your Windows and Doors

Walk around your home and check exterior doors and windows for noticeable drafts or gaps. Weatherstripping and caulk can be simple ways to improve comfort and keep conditioned air where it belongs.

3. Replace Your HVAC Filter

Your HVAC system will be working hard as temperatures change, so fall is a good reminder to check your filter. If it’s dirty, replace it with the appropriate filter for your system.

It’s a small task that can be easy to forget—and even easier to add to your regular home-care routine.

4. Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Take a few minutes to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if needed. It’s also a good time to make sure everyone in the household knows where to go in case of an emergency.

5. Take a Look at the Roof and Siding

You don’t need to climb onto the roof to give it a quick inspection. From the ground, look for missing or damaged shingles, visible wear on siding, or anything that doesn’t look quite right.

If you spot a potential issue, it’s better to have it checked out now rather than wait until bad weather makes the problem worse.

6. Give Your Outdoor Spaces a Little Attention

Before cooler weather arrives, clean your outdoor furniture and decide what needs to be stored, covered, or left out. Give your porch, patio, or deck a quick sweep, too.

You may even find that your outdoor space gets plenty of use during those first crisp fall evenings.

7. Check Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

Take a quick look at your outdoor faucets, hoses, and connections for leaks or damage. Drain and store hoses when you’re finished using them regularly, and make a note of anything that may need attention before colder weather arrives.

8. Refresh Your Landscaping

Fall is a great time to tidy up your yard. Remove dead plants and overgrowth, trim where needed, and add a little seasonal color if you enjoy gardening.

You don’t have to completely transform your landscaping. Sometimes a little cleanup is all it takes to make your home feel refreshed.

9. Look Over Walkways and Steps

Take a walk around your property and pay attention to sidewalks, steps, driveways, and other areas people regularly use. Look for cracks, loose materials, uneven spots, or anything that could become a bigger issue later.

It’s one of those simple things that’s easy to overlook when everything is familiar.

10. Make a List of Those “I’ll Get to It” Projects

Every homeowner has them.

The loose cabinet handle. The door that sticks. The spot on the wall that needs touching up. The repair you noticed months ago and keep meaning to address.

Make a short list and pick one or two things to take care of before the end of the year. You don’t have to tackle everything at once.

A Little Attention Goes a Long Way

Getting your home ready for fall doesn’t have to mean a major project list or a full weekend of work. Sometimes, it’s simply about noticing the little things and taking care of them before they become bigger things.

And that’s part of what makes homeownership so rewarding. Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. A little attention now can help you feel more comfortable, enjoy your space more, and head into the cooler months feeling ready.
